Hello, this is Shizuoka TaaS.
Today, we would like to introduce some places we visited in Shimada area.

First one is Shimada City Museum.

With the main theme being “travel & travelers”, this is an exhibition to explore why people travel and the history of Oi River crossing in the late Edo period. At the entrance of the exhibition room, you are greeted by the “Oyakko”, with obi belts hanging from the wooden sword. Oyakko is known as the key-person of the festival held in Shimada city and it is counted among the three most unusual festivals in Japan.

If you are keen on learning more about Japanese history, there is an annex which is a house that was built in the Meiji period, 1900. After taking a look around the two story old house enjoying the view of the garden, you can learn more about the tools that were used in the old days 🙂

Next stop, the Tea Museum.

This museum was opened in the spring of 2018, featuring exhibits introducing tea industry, history, and culture all over the world. Not only exhibitions, but there are also many experiences you can try such as grinding matcha tea, tea blending, and participating in tea ceremonies. Did you know that out of all the green tea that is produced in Japan, 40% of it is made here in Shizuoka?!

There are reataurants, cafes and souvenir stores where you can buy tea related items, ice cream, and so much more. The museum also offers audio guides in multiple langauages which makes the exploring even more inetresting! (seperate fee)

Last stop, Horai Bridge.

The bridge is a 897.4 kilometer long pedestrian bridge, that was registered as the “World’s most longest pedestrian wooden bridge” in the Guinness in 1997. It is still used as a farm road today, and is visited by many tourists even outside of Shizuoka prefecture.
You will find a sign saying “ど真ん中” which means “right in the middle” in Japanese when you reach the center of the bridge! 🙂

There are photo frame spots, cafe & small shops you can enjoy as we as crossing the Horai Bridge 🙂
