Learning the old lifestyle at Suishamura, Fujieda
~ Excited to experience the old life~
Hello! This is Shizuoka TaaS.
This time we visited “Suishamura” in Fujieda City, Shizuoka Prefecture. This is a facility where you can experience things as they used to be in a farmhouse around 250 years ago.
“Suisha” means water wheel, and “mura” is village in Japanese.
Being located in the mountains, the road gets narrower and narrower as you drive on, and you arrive at a point where there is no turning back!
We came accross a suspension bridge at the entrance of the facility. (It can be quite bumpy and scary.)
Every task is in your own hands!
Our mission is to make our own lunch by cooking rice and grilling fish!
First, we chop wood to use in the stove for cooking rice. It feels great when it splits evenly in one try!
Next, we hand-catched landlocked salmon. Very slippery and a quite difficult mission, but we were taught the tips by the owner. Afterwards, we challenged to fillet and skewer the fish ready to cook later on.
Then, we light the firewood and cook the rice in the Kamado. This process is very interesting since we use all our five senses, not something we are used to with the useful machines nowadays.
After all preparation, it was finally time to light the charcoal of “Irori”, an old fireplace in the house.
We cooked fish and vegetables in this fireplace and enjoyed the delicious meal with our self-cooked rice.
Relaxing in Nature
Suishamura is in harmony with the surrounding nature. Time passed slowly and we felt refreshed both mentally and physically. It will be even more beautiful during the fall season, and just taking a walk along the river is very relaxing too. The sound of the water and the breeze is pleasant, and just being in nature makes you forget about your busy daily life!
